So I'm writing to you the morning of...our CRUISE! We're as ready as can be for it, although I still don't have jogging worthy headphones, but I'm not running 5 miles to best buy to get a pair so I'll deal with my noise cancelling ones unless I can find something on the cruise or one of the ports.
We enjoyed our day in Miami. We hit a "dive" from the TV show 'Diners, Drive-ins and Dives' and despite it's exterior...and interior...and service...the food was awesome! Only one of us got a show featured meal and it was more then any two of us could have eaten. I think it was called the 11th St Diner, it was actually shipped down from it's previous location in Wilkes-Barre, PA...I think I may have eaten at it there too..if it used to be near the Social Security Building on Wilkes-Barre Ave.
I'm sure Miami is a great town, but the cold weather didn't lend itself to much walking so we drove a lot and saw everything from the car. We did stop a bit to do some shopping but there wasn't anything that anyone had to have so we got out cheap.
The highlight of the night though clearly was Joni's trip on a Metro Mover...she gets a little too excited about riding on a subway but since it was free, I couldn't not find a way to use it. We ended up taking it to some ocean front shops and ate dinner at Bubba Gumps Shrimp. Since we already returned our rental car, we were really at the mercy of public transit and our tolerance for cold...it was that or Chilis since all the other local restaurants were closed due to weather...yes, that's what I said. "CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER". I was shocked to see that some of these places have no indoor seating...none.
The night ended on a 12 pack of beer and a few mini bottles of wine and today we're up and at 'em ready to board...in 5 hours... Read Comments(0) | Leave Comment

Raining

Today was a cold, rainy day in the Keys. We didn't do much of anything as it was too cold to do much outside. We did drive all the way to the top of the Keys so that we could say that we drove from one end to the other.
We found this little place called Rib Daddy's to eat lunch at. The food was great but Steve was disappointed that they didn't have any ribs on the menu! There were two huge fish tanks in the building and Zack really enjoyed watching the fish swim around. We also got desert here. The Key Lime pie was awesome and we got a molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream that was very delicious.
We went shopping at a couple local stores and then headed back to our hotel. There were a couple animal things (dolphin thing and turtle hospital) that we would have like to take Zack to but they looked like they were all outside and it was too cold and rainy for that. We just hung out at the house for the rest of the day.
Linda and I were in the extra bedroom reading our books while they guys watched TV until Zack came to join us. He has this little box with 6 dinosaur books in it. He would climb on the bed and lay down by us and say "Yachary read his book too". He didn't really read the books. He simply enjoyed dumping his books out and then putting them back into the box. This worked until he "dropped" them off of the bed and they told us "Yachary hid books under Mommy" which he did because he shoved them under the bed.
We don't have a crib or pack-n-play for Zack here so he has been sleeping with Mommy and Daddy. As I was laying down with him tonight to put him to sleep he was so cute. He was ask me "sing another song Mommy" so of course I'd sing more. He kept wanting to hear the Santa song. If I would pause between songs, I would hear this coming from behind his binky "twinkle twinkle little star how I wonder what you are." He would say those two lines over and over. We'd also sing Little Boy Blue. I would sing until the last lines where Zack would say "underneath the haystack fast asleep no he's awake". I think that I fell asleep before he did but Steve came and woke me up after a little while.
We found a Red Box and watched Angels and Demons tonight. It was a pretty good movie. They guys ran out of beer half way through and unsuccessfully trying to get Linda and I to run up to the next block for some more decided that they would go. It was a good and bad - they got a short run out of the deal but the store was closed so they didn't get any more beer.
On to Miami tomorrow! Hopefully it will be a little warmer or at least not rain all day. Read entire post

Key West

After we finally got up this morning we headed out to find some breakfast. We found a local place called the Wooden Spoon. The food was great and the price was better. Then it was on for the 2.5 hour drive to Key West. You gotta love two lane roads with limited passing zones! Although it was kind of cool to drive through all the islands and see the view from all of the bridges.
We got there just in time for lunch. We drove down to mile marker 0 and found the southern most point of the continental US. This led us to seeing the Southernmost Hotel, the Southernmost Southernmost Hotel, the Southernmost Gift Shop, and so on. We got some cute pictures of us and Zack that I'll post soon (maybe not until we are back home). The ocean and views are gorgeous but I put my hand in the water and it was quite chilly.
After this, we made our way to Margaritaville. As this was the main point of the trip to Key West, we enjoyed the food and drinks. No one makes a better margarita, although the ones that you get at Cheeseburger in Paradise are much larger! One more stop down on our quest.
Zack did nothing but eat the entire day! We could not fill that child up. We kept joking that he was stretching his stomach so he could eat all the free food on the cruise ship. We saw the chickens and roosters walking around downtown and he thought that was great. I think that the highlight of the day for Zack was chasing the pigeons around the square and making them fly. He was so funny. He would say "see birdies" and then would go after them to try and catch them. He had the best time with Mark when Mark picked him up and they chased after the birds. He loved getting close enough to them to make them fly away.
We walked around and did a little shopping after lunch. It was fun. We stopped and got some Key Lime Pie on a stick. It didn't taste that good to me so I'll have to try a real piece of Key Lime Pie before we leave. We had such a gorgeous day today. It was warm enough that we could walk around in capris and flip flops. We went back to the water front (after a second trip to Margaritaville) to watch the sunset but by then there were a lot of clouds in the sky. While we were waiting we watched several street performers in the square. Some of them were pretty entertaining and one pulled Steve in to help out. I have that on video and Mark took pictures. Zack recognized the square that we were at and had more interest in chasing the birds around than watching the street performers juggle fire. All he kept asking for was to chase the birdies and make them fly. He also enjoyed watching all the boats going on the ocean and the airplanes flying low overhead as they landed and took off.
All in all we had a great day in Key West. They are saying it is going to be colder and rainy tomorrow. We are all hoping that the weathermen are wrong like usual. Read entire post

We are in Florida now and on VACATION!! YIPPEEE!!!
Steve had his graduation from his leadership program today. He got done about 2:30 so he picked up Zack was home by 3 to finish up things around the house and load the suitcases into the truck. I tried to get out of work about 3:45 but really left about 3:55 to get home about 4:15. We left home, picked up Mark and Linda, made one last stop, and were checked in at the airport by 6ish. That gave us about an hour to eat dinner before boarding started at 7 for our 7:20 flight.
The flight was not full so we were able to move to an empty row and give Zack his own seat. That worked out great. He learned how to buckle and unbuckle his seatbelt. Steve had a hard time getting the DVD to play but we were finally able to get the Cars movie to play for him. He looked so cute wearing Steve's noise cancelling headphones while staring at the laptop. He did such a good job. He kept telling me that we were going "up up up" all the way there until we started to land and then he said we were going "down down down".
The flight itself was uneventful - the kind that I love! However, when we got to the Miami airport and were walking toward baggage claim, the fire alarm kept going off. But I don't know what was more disturbing, the fire alarm going off or the message that kept playing something like "The fire alarm has been activated. The fire department is on the way to investigate. Please stand by for further instructions." I wonder if they would have said something different if there was a confirmed fire?
We got our rental car and made the 2 hour trip to Key Largo. We got to our hotel about 10 minutes ago. Let me just say that our room is nice but it is no wonder that they don't put any pictures of the outside of the building on the website as it is nothing to write home about. We are just glad that the inside is nice.
Let's hope that the weather holds up and we get a beautiful day in Key West tomorrow. Well, later today. Read entire post

So, we just finished packing for our trip. I got enough stuff (clothes, shoes, diapers, toys, etc) for 10 days for the three of us in one large, one medium, and two carry on bags. I don't know how I did it but since the first bag that each of us check is $20 each and the second checked bag is $35, we didn't want to check more than one bag each. I have to do a couple errands tomorrow and then we'll be ready to go. I am going to try and leave a little early but probably won't be out until 4. Zack is already so excited to be flying on an airplane tomorrow. Let's just hope it all goes smoothly. By this time tomorrow night we should be in Floriday on our way to Key Largo!Read Comments(0) | Leave Comment
